POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

Title:  Music Director/Coordinator

 

Position Summary:

The Music Director/Coordinator is responsible for recruitment, coordination, rehearsals, and performance of the overall music ministry of Bethel United Methodist Church. 

 

Responsibilities:

-- Selects music (hymns and anthems) to be used at the 10:15 AM weekly worship services based on scriptural or seasonal theme of each service; submits list of music to the church office for timely bulletin preparation and e-mail notice to musicians and accompanist.

-- Consults with the Pastor on music selections for special services.

-- Recruits and coaches members to share their musical gifts during weekly services, special music events, or in new ensembles.

-- Establishes rehearsals for choir(s), ensembles, and special music events to meet worship needs. Rehearsals for services include anthems and hymns.

-- Coordinates scheduling of all accompanists, musicians, and ensembles.

-- Leads, or provides for leadership of, music during weekly 10:15 AM worship services and special services.

-- Participates in either a vocal or instrumental capacity.

 

Background and Performance Requirements:

1. Education:

-- High school diploma, minimum.

-- Advanced degree or continuing education in music theory, directing, vocal and/or instrumental performance, preferred.

2. Experience:

-- Two years experience as a musical performer or director.

-- Successful leadership experience that entailed coaching and providing constructive feedback to individuals and groups.

-- Familiarity with contemporary worship services, preferred.

3. Competencies and Skills:

-- Reads music.

-- Accomplished vocal capabilities, preferred.

-- Plays piano, keyboard, and/or guitar, preferred.

-- Dependable, timely, and efficient.

-- Outgoing and enthusiastic.

-- Communicates accurately, effectively, and with sensitivity.

-- Maintains professional demeanor.

-- Honest and ethical.

 

4. Other Requirements or Qualifications:

-- Must be a member of a Christian body.

-- Must be able to provide own transportation.

 

Position Identification:

1. Hired By:                Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC)

2. Supervised By:       Pastor and SPRC

3. Supervises:             Accompanists

4. Coordinates With:  Pastor, SPRC, Worship Ministry Team (as a member of the Team), Christian Education & Family Programming Ministry Team (CE&FP), musicians

5. Hours of Work:

-- Minimum of one half hour prior to any worship service through the completion of the service. (Approximately two hours each week with additional hours to be negotiated for special/seasonal music needs.)

-- Participation in Worship Ministry Team meetings quarterly. (Approximately one hour per meeting.)

-- Music selection, preparation, rehearsals. (Approximately four hours each week.)

-- Six Sundays of vacation time per year, to be coordinated with the Pastor.

-- The position is exempt/salaried.
